Terms of Service
These terms cover the rules of the road for using Roast. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them.
The basics
Roast is a mobile app for discovering coffees, scanning bags, saving a personal shelf, and sharing reviews with other coffee drinkers. It's built and operated by Kip Builds LLC ("we", "us", or "Roast"), a New York limited liability company. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, form the agreement between you and Roast.
Who can use Roast
You need to be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to use Roast. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this age requirement and that you can enter into this agreement.
Your account
Accounts are created with Sign in with Apple. You're responsible for keeping your device and Apple ID secure; anyone who can sign in as you will have full access to your Roast account. One account per person — don't share accounts or create accounts on behalf of someone else.
You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete account.
Content you create
What you own
You own the reviews, ratings, scan photos, and other content you create in Roast. We don't claim ownership of any of it.
The license you give us
To actually run the app, you grant Roast a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, display, and distribute the content you post — but only to the extent needed to operate the service. For reviews and ratings, that means showing them to other Roast users as part of the community catalog. For private content (your shelf, profile, scan photos), that means syncing it across your devices. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for reviews that other users may have referenced or copies we keep in normal backups for a limited time.
Rules of the road
When posting reviews, ratings, or other content, don't:
- Post anything false, misleading, or fake — reviews should reflect your real experience with the coffee.
- Harass, threaten, or demean other users or roasters.
- Post hateful, sexually explicit, violent, or illegal content.
- Impersonate a roaster, retailer, or other user.
- Spam, advertise, or post promotional material on behalf of a roaster without disclosing it.
- Scrape, copy, or resell the catalog or community data.
- Interfere with the service, try to bypass security, or abuse the AI scanning features.
We may remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules. For serious or repeated violations, we may terminate your account.
About the catalog
Roast includes a shared catalog of coffees and roasters. Some of that information is extracted automatically from photos you scan using AI (Claude, by Anthropic), and some is gathered from public sources. The catalog:
- May be incomplete, inaccurate, or out of date. Roaster names, origins, and tasting notes are provided as a best effort.
- Includes trademarks, product names, and brand assets that belong to their respective owners. Roast doesn't claim any rights to those marks.
- Is provided for personal discovery and enjoyment — not for commercial use, redistribution, or scraping.
If you're a roaster and want information about your coffees updated or removed, email kishan@kipbuilds.com.
AI and scans
When you scan a coffee bag, Roast sends the photo to Anthropic's Claude API to extract product details (roaster, coffee name, origin, tasting notes, roast level). AI extraction isn't perfect — results may be wrong or missing. You're welcome to correct anything in the app, but Roast makes no guarantee that extracted information is accurate.
Our stuff
The Roast app, website, brand, logo, design, and original content are owned by us and protected by copyright and trademark law. You may use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes as intended. You may not copy, reverse-engineer, or resell any part of the app.
Third-party services
Roast uses a small number of third-party services (listed in our Privacy Policy) to run. Their terms and privacy practices apply to the parts they handle. We're not responsible for issues caused by those services beyond what's described in our own policies.
Changes to Roast
Roast is under active development. We may add, change, or remove features, and we may change these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes to these Terms, we'll update the effective date at the top and let you know in the app or by email. Continued use of Roast after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
Ending the agreement
You can stop using Roast and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously violate these Terms, if required by law, or if we need to wind down the service. If your account is deleted, your personal data is removed as described in the Privacy Policy.
Disclaimers
Roast is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind — express or implied. We don't guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any information in it is accurate. Your use of Roast is at your own risk.
Roast is a small project. We'll do our best to keep it working and accurate, but things may break, AI will occasionally misread a bag, and catalog information can be wrong. Don't rely on Roast for anything safety-critical, and sanity-check important details with the roaster directly.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, Roast and anyone associated with it are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app — including loss of data, lost profits, or business interruption. Our total liability for any claim related to Roast is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the last 12 months (likely zero — the app is free today) and (b) USD $50.
Some jurisdictions don't allow these limitations, in which case they apply only to the extent permitted.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in New York County, New York, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. If you're a consumer residing in a jurisdiction with mandatory local protections, those protections still apply.
